Katrin Mickiewicz

Katrin Mickiewicz was born on the 12.01.1977 in Cieszyn/Poland and grew up in Iserlohn/Germany. She was drawn to music at early age, starting with violin and sing in choirs at age 7. She starts to record songs for children by the age of 11 and begins to play the piano. At the age of 13 she composes her first pieces for piano, violin and voice. She takes part in Youth Symphonic orchestras (violin) and forms her first own band "Razzmatazz" (voice and violin) at the age of 15.

In 1996 she graduates and applies for admission to jazz composing/arranging studies at the "Folkwanghochschule Essen" (GER). After taking the entrance exam she was admitted in September 1996 with a scholarship. Her teachers were composition/arranging - Prof. Peter Herborn, piano - Peter Walter, theory - Prof. Wolfgang Burbat and Prof. Peter Herborn.

She composes works for symphonic orchestras, chamber orchestra, jazz orchestra, string quartet and other ensembles. In her compositions she works on her own style combining east-European folk, modern jazz, contemporary classic and pop.

She performs live with her solo-program for viola/ piano and voice and with steady groups:
"disguise", a folk-jazz-avangarde quartet with Alexander Morsey - bass, Kasia Bortnik-Dragon (PL) - voice, Miriam Frank - alto-/sopranosaxphone. Katrin composes the pieces and sings, plays viola, violin or piano.
"VIOCAL", improvisation-quartet with Petras Vysniaukas (LIT) - saxophones, Klaus Kugel - percussion, Ludger Schmidt - cello

She sings and plays in several theater pieces in Moers and Dortmund and in the performance "Wo ist zuhause, Mama", in Munster, music by Jan Klare.
In Summer 2000 till march 2001 on she performs in a contemporary chamber opera called "Die Maden", composed by Eckard Koltermann, libretto by Jan Demuth and regie by Sybille Broll-Pape. The piece was successfully performed in Bochum, Dusseldorf (GER), Arnhem (NL) and Vienna (AUS).
In December 2000 she sings 3 concerts with the "WDR-Big Band" lead by Bill Dobbins with music composed by Eckard Koltermann and Jan Klare.

In Mai 2001 she graduates her composition-studies with a piece for chamber orchestra and jazz quartet called "grau-blau" (written July 2000 - March 2001) She can win reputated and well known jazz musicians (Tom Lorenz - vib, Christoph Hillmann - perc., Axel Knappmeyer - sax and Alexander Morsey - bass) and classical students for this piece. In this work she tries to combine elements of jazz like groove and improvisation with folk elements and contemporary classic.

Since September 2001 she starts her studies in Jazz singing (Ge Titular), classical viola (Esther Apituley) and piano (Berend van den Berg) at the "Conservatorium van Amsterdam" (NL)

She is an experienced musician on stage and in studio, gives workshops, teaches privately and works on compositions for her groups as well as on live -, studio and theater projects of different styles in Germany and Netherlands.
