Technical tips and support

This page should help you to fully enjoy the technical possibilites that the "Gallery of Tones" has to offer. In order to use the sound samples, as well as the documents offered in PDF format, you need special software. Below we show you how to get this software and how to install it.

1. Music formats:

At the "Gallery of Tones" we offer different music formats for different purposes:

Real Audio:

Real Audio is a so-called Streaming-Format, which has relatively small file sizes and which we use at the "Gallery of Tones" to play the different compositions. The quality of the pieces is comparable to medium wave radio quality.

To listen to Real Audio on your computer you need the Real Audio Player that you can download free here. To install the software simply follow the instructions.

MP3 :

MP3 is a compression procedure developed by the Fraunhofer Institut to provide soundfiles in smaller file sizes but without audible quality loss. MP3 music quality is comparable to that of a CD. On the Internet MP3 is a very common and popular format, for which multitude of free programmes is offered.

At the Gallery of Tones we provide you with complete pieces of music, arrangements and sound experiments, uncut and in MP3 format. To play-back the pieces you need the corresponding software; the links to the download sites for Windows and Macintosh platforms are here:

Shortcuts for Audioplayers

Sometimes after installing or updating applications the browserpreferences get changed by these softwares.
If you want to be sure that your sounds always are played by the software of your choice you can either choose your browserpreferences or play the sounds manually. Therefore you copy the link location in your browser first and then paste this adress into the location dialogue of your player.

1. Copy the link location in your browserwindow
(Mac: longclick or ctrl+click; PC: rightclick)

2. Choose your audioplayer
Quicktime Player: Open new url (Mac: cmd+U; PC: ctrl+U)
RealPlayer: Open new location (Mac: cmd+L; PC: ctrl+L)

3. Paste the link location into the following dialogue:
(Mac: cmd+V; PC: ctrl+V)

2. PDF - Format:

PDF (portable data format) is an operating system-independant print format from Adobe. It allows the reproduction of the print files including all graphic and typographic elements. We have provided some of the information about certain artists, ensembles and courses in this format for you to download. To view these documents you need Acrobat Reader, which you can download from the following site:
