Oene van Geel - click to zoom
Oene van Geel
Oene van Geel studied jazz violin and composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory. At the Conservatory of Amsterdam he attended the "New contemporary music through non-western techniques" course, which focuses on a combination of comtemporary western music and classical South Indian music.

Whether he is playing violin, viola or percussion, Oene van Geel is always integrating elements from different musical traditions such as jazz and improvised music, contemporary music, classical music, pop music and ethnical music from around the world.

Oene van Geel is very active in the Dutch jazz scene, playing in and writing music for bands (On the Line, Mosaic, Bhedam, ZAPP! string quartet) and projects (with Mathilde Santing, ex-Zappa guitar player Mike Keneally, Dirk Tanghe).

He has won many contests: Amersfoorts Jazz Festival (1997), Nederlands Jazz Concours (1998), International Jazz Contest in Getxo, Spain (as runner up, 1998), Jur Naessens Muziek Prijs (2000), Dutch Jazz Competition (2001). As a composer, Oene van Geel is supported by the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst. Furthermore, he was commissioned by the Dutch broadcasting companies VPRO for the "SJU Jazz Festival" and the NPS for "De Marathon" in Groningen.

Tobias Klein
Alto saxophone and bass clarinet player Tobias Klein was heard both with his trio Man Bites Dog and with bigtet Tetzepi during the Young VIPs Tour in 1999. For Tetzepi he was commissioned by the SJU Jazz Festival 2000 to write several compositions. He played with John Zorn in his "Cobra" piece and with the Fra Fra Big Band at, among others, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague. Tobias has performed at major festivals in Europe and as a soloist in the main hall of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. His compositional work is supported by the Dutch "Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst". He is co-founder of the musicians« collective "TryTone".

Wiek Hijmans
Wiek Hijmans has been playing the electric guitar since the age of eleven. His interest in both (contemporary) classical as well as in popular music gave him a task for life: integrating the electric guitar in the classical tradition, thus adding a new world of sounds to that tradition.

Influences from jazz, rock and an attitude stemming from extensive experience as an improviser make Hijmans both as a performer and as a composer a typical exponent from the current state of music. Both as a soloist and as an ensemble player, Hijmans performed in many places: from Moscow to Vancouver, from Helsinki to Palermo, from Bratislava to New York.

With major Dutch new music groups, The Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, duo with classical guitar master David Starobin, duo with International Gaudeamus Award winning Australian violinist Anna McMichael, his own ensembles and the Dutch-American arts collective TONK, of which Hijmans is co-artistic director. Hijmans received the Andres Segovia Award for outstanding guitar playing (New York, 1997), was commissioned several times by the Dutch Fund for Compositions, is to be heard at about two dozens of CDs and appears regularly in radio and TV performances.

Mark Haanstra
Mark Haanstra studied bass guitar and double bass at the Conservatory of Hilversum. From 1995 till 1999 he attended the "Contemporary music through non-western techniques" course at the Conservatory of Amsterdam conducted by composer Rafael Reina. This course specialises in Carnatic (South Indian) music theory for improvisational and compositional purposes. He won several prizes, including the "Dutch Jazz Competition" (twice, with Nemesis Quartet and GEEL).

Since the last couple of years Mark Haanstra works in the improvised and jazz field as well in the contemporary classical field. He is seeking for a personal style which combines influences from both traditions. Mark Haanstra plays in several bands: "Mosaic" (NL), "Odds-On" (B), "TONK" (USA), "Interval Chamber" (NL-ESP), Sefuba (NL), "AGOG" (D-NL) and his own group "Bhedam". He has performed in many countries including the USA, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands. He has recorded several CDs with a wide variety of groups and artists.
