Langedijk is an adventurer; a creative spirit who is innovative with space, melody and harmony, without conforming to one style. Together with bassist Udo Pannekeet and drummer Hans van Oosterhout, he incorporates elements of contemporary jazz, blues, classical, fusion and country in Up North in an original way.
It is quite clear from this 6th album Up North how the trio has grown in the past 10 years. The album title Up North represents going home, to the northern part of The Netherlands, where Langedijk was born. To develop the compositions for this album, guitarist Langedijk and bassist Pannekeet spent the summer in Wedgeview Studio, located in the green heart of The Netherlands. A region that a century and a half ago was much loved by painters from The Hague, they found their inspiration for the particular sky, light and water. Distant from crowds, the two created this 6th album in peace. This unique collaboration resulted in a number of compositions that defines the band more than ever.
Distinctive for this album is the way the six-string bass and the guitar complement each other melodically and harmonically; an element that has grown tremendously in the past years. The album is recorded in the Wedgeview Studio and mixed by Langedijk and Pannekeet themselves. The mastering was done by the legendary Greg Calbi, at Sterling Sound, New York.
Guitarist Tim Langedijk (b.1984) started playing (classical) guitar at the age of ten. He graduated cum laude at the conservatory of Rotterdam. Besides leading his own trio, he has toured internationally with the Gabriela Kozyra Quartet and The Great Eyeballs. He is a sought-after studio guitarist in The Netherlands and works as an arranger for many different productions. He is currently teaching at the conservatory of Haarlem.
Bassist Udo Pannekeet (b.1978) graduated cum laude at the conservatory of Amsterdam. In 2002 he started his own quintet Pitch Pine Project (PPP) featuring Martijn van Iterson, Tom Beek, Chris Strik and Rob van Bavel. The group received a lot of critical acclaim in The Netherlands as well as in other parts of Europe, playing in France, Belgium and Germany. PPP performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival twice, with famous trumpet player Randy Brecker. Udo has played at major festivals and venues in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, China, the Philippines and Switzerland. In 2013 he released an acoustic album under his own name, entitled On, together with Jeroen van Vliet, Pascal Vermeer and the Belgium saxophonist Erwin Vann. Udo teaches bass guitar and theory at the conservatories in Tilburg, Haarlem and Enschede.
Drummer Hans van Oosterhout (b.1965) started playing at the age of seven. He studied drums at the Jazz Department of the Rotterdam conservatory. Even before finishing his studies, he was offered a position as a drum teacher at the Rotterdam conservatory, a position he still holds today, 27 years later. He also currently teaches at Fontys in Tilburg. Over the years Hans has established himself as one of the much sought-after drummers in Europe. In 1998 The Belgian Jazz Magazine voted Hans ‘Best European Jazz Drummer’. He has been performing with Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Gary Burton, Kenny Werner, Lionel Loueke, Johnny Griffin, Randy Brecker, John Scofield, Gino Vannelli and many more.
